Work Experience:

Feb 2001 - Jan 2003 VALOR Telecommunications
Server Engineer / Software Developer

The environment at VALOR consisted of a Windows 2000 domain with about 1500 users, and approximately 80 servers spread across four major sites. The servers ranged in size from Compaq Blade servers up to larger 4 processor Proliant servers, some of which were connected to a 4 terabyte EMC Clariion SAN. There were also approximately 12 Sun Solaris servers, ranging from Netra T1 and X1 servers, up to 4 processor E450 and 420R servers.

I was responsible for defining the specifications for, purchasing, and installing new server hardware, and configuring the base OS and any software that was installed on new servers. I configured and maintained servers running MSSQL 7.0 and 2000, including performing DBA duties. I also implemented and maintained the backup procedures for servers in my local office, and VALOR's remote offices, using Veritas Backup Exec, and Veritas NetBackup software. Backups were performed using individual DLT drives, DLT libraries and LTO libraries.

I configured and administered VALOR's production and development Intranet servers running Microsoft IIS. VALOR's Intranet served up static HTML documents for many departments, as well as running a number of custom applications. Among these applications are an employee time sheet system, a system for tracking complaints from customers for the PUC, and a system to track disconnects and reconnects of customer telephone.

I engineered a system using a combination of VALOR's Cisco PIX firewall, Debian GNU/Linux running on a Compaq Blade server, OpenSSL, and Squid proxy server to allow authenticated users from some of VALOR's external business partners to be able to have encrypted access specific portions of VALOR's Intranet servers from outside the firewall. External users could be given access to specific directories and files on VALOR's Intranet web servers based on combinations of user names and IP addresses.

I wrote a prototype web-based workflow system to automate part of VALOR's Change Management process. The system runs under IIS, using Perl and MSSQL 2000. The prototype is still in use in production, and my replacement system was only partially completed before I left the position. I also designed and implemented VALOR's web based employee telephone directory system, which has been in service for about 2 years.

Oct 1998 - Dec 2000 Commonwealth Telephone Enterprises
LAN Engineer

The environment at CTE consisted of about 10 Novell Netware servers, spread out across 4 remote sites. The major sites were connected by a minimum of a single T1; some of those sites were connected via T3, FDDI, and 100Mbps fibre. There were approximately 15 smaller remote sites, all connected by T1. The majority of the time I spent at CTE we used 3Com network hardware. Remote access into CTE's network was provided by a small farm of Citrix Metaframe servers.

My duties involved maintaining CTE's existing Novell servers, and maintaining the existing infrastructure of 3Com and Cisco network equipment, and performing any needed upgrades or additions. I was also involved in planning and implementing the upgrade of the Citrix farm from Citrix Winframe to Citrix Metaframe 1.8.

I built and administered CTE's Intranet server, a small Compaq Proliant running NT 4.0 and IIS. It mostly served up static documents, but it also housed the corporate telephone directory.

Helpdesk Administrator

In the role of Helpdesk Administrator, I was the first level of support for the 1200 users on the corporate network. I was responsible for creating new Novell user accounts, and maintaining user permissions on existing accounts. I was also the second level of support for CTE's team of LAN Administrators, and would assist them with server and network issues.

Oct 1996 - Jul 1998 MetLife
Field Systems Analyst

In this position, I was first level support on the corporate helpdesk. I provided support for network issues, Lotus Notes, a variety of PC applications, and for CICS applications and TSO on four mainframes. I troubleshooted mainframe printer and terminal connectivity issues. I also handled problems involving NT domain, Lotus Notes, and RACF security.
